Royal Government of Bhutan signs contract with DataTorque to implement Revenue Management System to support introduction of GST in the country

 

Wellington, New Zealand – 29 August 2024

 

DataTorque, a leading global provider of tax administration solutions, is pleased to announce the signing of a significant contract with Bhutan’s Department of Revenue and Customs to implement its Revenue Management System. The agreement, finalised on August 23rd, 2024, marks a major milestone in the ongoing modernisation of Bhutan’s tax administration system and support the introduction of GST in the country. It is the largest digital transformation project undertaken by the Royal Government of Bhutan.


Under this contract, DataTorque will provide consultancy services to implement their Revenue Management System (RMS) tailored to the specific needs of the Department of Revenue and Customs in the Kingdom of Bhutan. This initiative is part of Bhutan's broader strategy to enhance its tax collection processes, improve efficiency, and increase transparency in public revenue management.

The RMS implementation is designed to streamline revenue collection, enhance compliance, and provide a solid foundation to fund essential public services and infrastructure for Bhutan. DataTorque’s extensive experience in implementing similar systems across 16 jurisdictions worldwide will be instrumental in ensuring the successful delivery of this project.

Bhutan is a land-locked country situated between China and India in the Eastern Himalayas and is home to fewer than a million people. Known as the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’, Bhutan is a predominantly Buddhist country that was closed to tourists until the 1970s. Its economy is based on agriculture, forestry, the sale of hydroelectric power to India, and tourism. It is famed for having a Gross National Happiness index, by which it measures quality of life, even though it is ranked 178th in the world by GDP.
